The KAGOME(籠目) pattern is a geometric design inspired by the mesh of a traditionally woven bamboo basket. In Japanese, "Kago" means basket, and "Me" means eyes-referring to the "eyes" or openings of the basket.

A Star of Protection (Warding Off Evil)
If you look closely at the KAGOME pattern, you will see a continuous series of six-pointed stars (hexagrams). In Japanese culture, this star shape has long been believed to possess spiritual power to ward off evil spirits and bad luck. Because of this, the pattern is highly regarded as a powerful protective amulet.
How it Was Used in Daily Life
At the Doorway: In the past, people would hang a bamboo basket upside down near their entrances to keep negative energy away from their homes.
On Clothing: People wore Kimonos with the KAGOME pattern when traveling, wishing for a safe journey and protection from illness.
At Shrines: You can still find this star emblem carved into stone lanterns at some of Japan's most sacred Shinto shrines.
Modern Connections
Today, the KAGOME pattern is a star feature in Edo Kiriko (traditional Japanese cut glass craft), where the lines are beautifully etched into colorful glass to catch the light.
