At first glance, the ICHIMATSU(市松) pattern looks just like a Western checkerboard. However, in Japan, this timeless design carries a rich history and a beautiful meaning.

Origin of the Name
The pattern is named after "Ichimatsu Sanogawa", a highly popular Kabuki actor in the 18th century (Edo period). When he wore trousers with this green and blue checkered pattern on stage, it became an instant fashion sensation among the Japanese public. Ever since, the pattern has been called "ICHIMATSU."
A Symbol of Prosperity
In Japanese culture, the ICHIMATSU pattern is considered very auspicious (lucky). Because the squares repeat endlessly without interruption, it symbolizes:
